University of Richmond

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers degree programs in mathematics, computer science and mathematical economics. The mathematics program (including mathematical economics) provides students the opportunity to study the science of number, quantity and space, including applications to other fields. Computer science offers students a framework for understanding computer technology and its mathematical foundations and provides the opportunity to develop the skills needed to use that technology to solve a huge range of real-world problems. Degree programs include:

In addition, students in other disciplines can choose to pursue a minor in mathematics or a minor in computer science.

While a curriculum is built around challenging coursework, many mathematics and computer science students enhance their education by participating in independent research projects and other experiential learning opportunities such as internships or study abroad. Mathematics students have a unique opportunity to explore mathematical research through the department's LURE (Long-term Undergraduate Research Experience) Program. Several computer science faculty are mentoring research students supported by NSF grants of university-sponsored fellowships. The department also sponsors a mathematics and computer science colloquium series, which features speakers from inside and outside the University.

By building a program that includes learning inside and outside the classroom, students guarantee that they will be well prepared for careers or graduate school.
