Experiential Learning

Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re given the chance to take what they've learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship or studying abroad.

Internships

Math and computer science majors often want to see firsthand how the material they’re studying will translate to a rewarding career. Internships are excellent vehicles for doing just that. Once students have secured internships through the Career Development Center, they can apply to earn academic credit by taking either MATH 388 or CMSC 388.  Students should read the internship guidelines before beginning the search process, as some regulations may impact the type of positions that can be accepted. For instance, internships cannot be paid if academic credit is also being given. After students have secured a suitable position, they can apply to receive appropriate academic credit for the experience by completing the proposal for internship form

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are also available for computer science majors who have made substantial gains in software development under the supervision of a faculty member. Students may either design a project and find a faculty member to oversee it, or a faculty member may suggest an idea for a potential project. Students should read the computer science apprenticeship guidelines. If they would like a project to be considered for academic credit, they should then submit a proposal for CMSC 288 apprenticeship application form to the faculty supervisor.

Study Abroad

Recent mathematics and computer science majors have studied abroad at the following universities:

  • Lancaster University, Lancaster, England
  • University of Bristol, Bristol, England
  • Queen Mary-Westfield, London, England
  • University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland
  • University of Ulster, Northern Ireland
  • University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
  • Saint Louis University, Madrid, Spain
  • Denmark's International Study Program, Copenhagen, Denmark

Most have chosen to participate in one-semester programs, typically during their third year at Richmond. Some have chosen to complete an entire year abroad, while others have opted for summer programs. Students who are interested in completing a summer study abroad experience should consider applying to a program as early as their first year on campus, since during the summer following their first year, most students won’t yet have made research and internship commitments.

Regardless of when and for how long you decide to complete your study abroad experience, it’s important to start planning early to guarantee you don’t fall behind on major requirements. Begin looking into requirements during your first year, consult with the Office of International Education about opportunities that mesh with your major and career goals, ensure that your academic work will transfer back to Richmond and check in frequently with your major advisor to be sure your study abroad program and goals are academically sound.

Student Employment

Students who are interested in paid opportunities may also want to consider several student employment opportunities within the department.
