Common name: Wintergreen barberry.

Brief description: A shrub to 2 m tall; with 3-parted spines (modified primary leaves). Leaves are ovate to lanceolate, simple, alternate, entire, margins spiny-toothed. Flowers are perfect, yellow, very fragrant,  in fascicles of about 15. Fruits are a black, bloomy one-seeded berry. 

Campus data: Occasionally cultivated around paths in various places around the campus. The very fragrant flowers attract a lot of bees and other pollinators in March and April.
