Common name: Strawberry bush; American burning bush.

Brief description: A shrub to 2 m; the twigs are green, 4-angled and stiffly divergent. Leaves are lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, simple, opposite, entire, pinnately veined, margins sharply serrate-toothed. The foliage turns white in autumn. Flowers are perfect, greenish-purple, solitary or in cymes in the axils. Fruits are smooth, purplish, and capsular with orange arils. 

Campus data: Occasionally in the wild as undergrowth of Westhampton Forest. Practically absent elsewhere on campus.
