Common name: Spice-bush.

Brief description: An aromatic, much-branched deciduous, mostly dioecious shrub. Leaves are obovate to oblong or elliptic, simple, alternate, entire, pinnately veined, margins entire. The uppermost leaves on each branch are the largest. Flowers are unisexual, yellow, appearing before the leaves in dense clusters. Fruits are one-seeded, short-stalked, red, ellipsoid.
